      What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when blocked hair follicles result in pimples. Several forms of acne can develop.

Acne that presents above the skin includes:

      • blackheads – black, open pores
      • papules – small red bumps
      • pustules – red bumps with pus at the top

Acne that forms under the skin include:

      • whiteheads – white, closed pores
      • nodules – solid, large, and painful
      • cysts – filled with pus and hurt

      What Causes Acne?

Hair follicles contain glands that make oil called sebum. The blockage that traps sebum in follicles can form from dead skin cells and hair. The resulting bacteria leads to swelling, causing acne.

Excess sebum from androgen (male hormone) overproduction is believed to be the main cause.

Acne tends to occur in those going through puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy. It can also be triggered by friction on the skin or dried skin, which can occur from wearing face masks.

Several factors can act as acne triggers. They include:

      • touching your face
      • sleeping on a dirty pillowcase
      • using skin products with ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate
      • over-using benzoyl peroxide and other topical acne treatments
      • sun exposure
      • diet (Learn about Acne Free Diet)
      • lack of sleep
      • stress
      • smoking
      • using medications like corticosteroids
