How using the right skincare products can complement and enhance the results of aesthetic treatments

We all learn best from stories, they say. So, settle in to hear a story about Sally. Sally was a beautiful, bright, vivacious woman. She ate a fairly decent diet and never missed her morning run. But she had a score of skin problems. Her rough, scaly, sagging combination skin had more fine lines and wrinkles than she could count – and that was just for starters. Everywhere you looked, Sally’s body was aging before its time.

Sally was famous for taking care of everyone but herself. She would wash her face with the baby’s shampoo half the time. If she used moisturizer (which was rare), she would slap on the cheapest one she could find from the corner drug store and head out the door for her day. She joked that she was a wash-and-wear kind of girl. That has its appeal, sure, until it doesn’t.

She would never dare put anything on her face before bed – fearing the smell would not go over well with her husband. She also didn’t like the idea of getting her expensive new pillow shams greasy or stained. We all have our priorities, right?

As you probably can guess, this lack of even basic skin care caught up with Sally. That’s when she panicked and came to us so we could “fix” her. Every good story has a lesson, and in Sally’s case, the lesson was clear: it was time to take better care of herself and her body, especially her skin. Our skin is our largest organ and the first organ in the body to show wear.

From her head (thinning hair and premature 11 lines) to her feet (cracked heels and toenail fungus), Sally needed some help with self-care. We explained that no matter what rabbits we pulled out of our hats, nothing we did would be truly effective or lasting if she didn’t participate in her skin care.

So, let’s talk about what self-care looks like – especially skin care.

      What does self-care look like?

Self-care comes down to five things: eating right, healthy movement, taking care of your overall health, establishing routines and using the right skincare products in the right way. It’s that simple.

Now, just the one category of “taking care of your health,” has so many sub-categories. Are you getting enough sleep? Have you found a way to deal with stress? Are you taking the vitamins you should be taking? The list goes on, and it can get complicated. As can eating right and finding a healthy movement regimen you can stick with.

But there are two things on our Top 5 list that are relatively simple – establishing routines and using the right skincare products. Those are two things you can put on a list and do them every day.

If you look at pictures of people centuries ago, they didn’t age well. Fortunately, research and technology have given us options they didn’t have. We can look fabulous decades beyond what was possible back then. It’s a shame they didn’t have access to what we have today – but the real shame is not using what’s right in front of us to extend the health and beauty of our bodies.

Even if you never step through our doors or experience the magic of aesthetic medicine, if you learn one thing from this blog, let it be how to take care of yourself, especially your skin. You will thank us in the long run.

Do all aesthetic treatments require the use of skincare products?

The foundation of any aesthetic treatment is a consistent skincare regimen. So, in that respect, yes, all aesthetic treatments require the use of skin products. The basics are essential:

Cleanse regularly: Don’t under cleanse, but don’t over cleanse. Most people do one or the other. Our Beta Enzyme is one of a few cleansers we carry. Its combination of Papaya Enzymes and Salicylic Acid works to slough away dead skin cells. It removes makeup and impurities found on the skin's surface, reviving dry and aging skin. It stimulates the production of new cells and delivers a brighter, clearer complexion.

Moisturize often: You can’t over-do moisturizing if you’re using the right moisturizers. From our Intensive Recovery Cream to our HydraLite Moisturizer, we carry an array of exceptional moisturizing products that are perfect for your skin type.

Exfoliate as needed: Our MicroDERM Scrub is one of our client favorites. Exfoliation is important because it removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, stimulates cell turnover and collagen production, and reveals a brighter, fresher complexion. Exfoliation not only unclogs pores and improves skin texture, it also allows skincare products to penetrate deeper, ultimately promoting a healthier and more youthful appearance.

Feed your skin: Your skin needs nutrients and vitamins too! Vitamin C is an example of a vitamin you need on the inside and outside of your body. It not only protects your skin from free radicals, but is essential for the synthesis of collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm and elastic. Replenishing your Vitamin C from food helps keep your collagen stores rich and your skin looking renewed, fresh and youthful, but skin products like our antioxidant C-Bright Cream can be game changers in the look and feel of your skin – and how it responds to our aesthetic treatments.

Treat skin problems: Treat them before they become problems that can’t be treated. From our Age Reversal Neck Cream to our HA Collagen Booster, we have a range of treatment products that can slow or even prevent problems from developing. We’ll recommend products we think you need, but you know your skin better than anyone. Just point out your problem and ask if we have something that can treat it.

Protect your skin: Our Clear Defense (SP 45) is just one of our best protective options, and we’re here to discuss with you all your options for environmental defense.

Hydrate your skin: The final skincare product that is essential: water. Hydrating your skin with the perfect product is perhaps even more important than feeding it. As I’ve pointed out before, the human body can live indefinitely without food, but only a few days without water. That tells us something. A lack of water can not only lead to more wrinkling, but it can also weaken your skin’s barrier function. Hydration brings firmness, elasticity and that dewy appearance only water can bring.

Before and After: Each of our procedures is different, just like your skin is different, and we may recommend certain skincare products to use before or after a specific procedure. It’s important to follow instructions to ensure you get the results you are hoping for.

A carefully designed skincare routine prepares your skin for aesthetic treatments, not only improving outcomes, but minimizing risks and extending the effects. Like your car, it’s also important to take your skin in for checkups and basic maintenance between more advanced procedures. Take advantage of facials as advised between treatments.

      Doing it right.

We have done our research and hand-selected the highest quality, medical-grade skincare products to assist you in meeting your individualized needs. Our goal is to improve and promote healthy skin through the use of proprietary formulations containing the highest concentrations and quality of active ingredients possible.

All of the products in the New Life Aesthetics skincare repertoire are produced in a licensed FDA-registered facility and are medical grade quality. Each product is free of Parabens, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Petrolatum, Propylene Glycol, Cocamide DEA, Prop 65, Formaldehyde, 1-4 Dioxane, Hexelyne Glycol, Decelyne Glycol, Hormones and Sulfates.

We begin with a photo skin analysis to help identify the underlying condition of your skin. Your skin type, age, condition, budget and lifestyle are all considered as we plan your skincare regimen. The benefits of the product and how it should be used will be explained in detail.

Skincare product selection is customized to meet individual needs and concerns – and we are eager to take the time to customize a plan of care that is as unique as you are!

      Now, that’s just wrong.

Just as important as the impact the right skincare products can have on your skin is the even greater impact the wrong products can have. The wrong ingredients, preservatives and chemicals in skincare products can be catastrophic to your overall health, including skin health. Consumer protection agencies warn us that even if all the ingredients on the label appear to be safe, we can’t always trust labels. Be careful with the skincare products you use.
